Why Did I Go See This?

I think I've made clear on this blog before that I wasn't exactly Tyler Perry's biggest fan. Though I applauded his hustle, I wasn't necessarily giddy over his execution all the time. Sometimes I would laugh hysterically, other times I would sit there expressionless. But this post isn't about any of that. My cynicism can take a break for this entry.

I was curious about the film after learning that Janet Jackson was involved. I became more interested after seeing the trailers: It looked like it may actually be a good film. One of my best friends :) asked me to go, even offered to pay. No I'm not cheap; it was a bribe. I've made her sleep through a bevy of films she would never pay to see on her own, so she had to make her point. But, she didn't need to bribe or guilt trip me. I saw Why Did I Get Married? because I wanted to. Yes, the title of the entry is intented to be misleading. I know some expected me to hate this movie. I've given people plenty of reason to.

It pays to give people a chance and allow them the opportunity to grow and get better. I tend to cringe when I read some of my old blog posts.

I'm glad I saw the movie because I loved it. I went in with no preconceived notions or judgments. It's good that I did as I'm sure if I had gone in expecting the worst, I would have ruined the film before the end of the first scene.

The story flowed a lot better than it has in his other films. The writing was a lot better as was the directing. I'll be buying (versus 'finding') the DVD in the coming months.

When I first heard about Janet doing this movie, I questioned it. I can admit that I was wrong about that. I need to stop thinking like Jermaine Jackson.

I'm happy Tyler went number one this weekend. I'm happy that uninformed journalists (Diary of a Mad Housewife???) didn't thwart that accomplishment. I'm happy that a movie featuring positive portrayals of black people managed to beat out Hollywood's elite and offer some perspective to uninformed naysayers.

I'm glad I was even given a bit of perspective.

I don't apologize for or negate my previous views, but I can give credit when its due. He deserves his success. Go see the movie.
